The aim of this study is to evaluate knowledge and behaviours on doping and food supplementation of a sample of body-builders in which anti-doping prevention programs are implemented compared to body-builders which received no intervention.

Methods: The study was initiated using a questionnaire about the effect of doping substances, and the use of the food supplementation submitted to 70 body-builders of St.Anastasia's sporting centre (intervention group IG) and 138 athletes from Lazio and Campania's sporting centres (control group, CG).

Results: In the IG 63 body-builders entered the study (age range 13-54 yrs, median 18 yr),48 males (76.2%) and 15 females (23.8%); in the CG 125 athletes were recruited ( median age 20years old), 73 males (58.4%) and 52 females (41.6%). In IG 23.4% of responders considered doping as a practice diffuse in the sport of high level vs 40% in CG. It is considered diffuse in the sport at all levels by 17.2% in IG and 9.7% in CG.

Doping is considered an illegal practice by 40.6% of responders in the IG and by 42.4% of those in the CG, respectively, and it is seen as a recourse to substances which present some risk by 36% and 35.4% in the two groups.

The results of the multivariate regression analysis show that are significantly associated to the attitude " the drugs are acceptable to improve the performances" (dependent variable) the following variables: age (lower propensity in young people), gender (males present a higher attitude), group (lower attitude in the interventional group), and the distance home-gymnasium.

Conclusions: The favourable attitude to take drugs, illicit or not, is high, in particular in the CG. The prevention programme in tackling doping and the not correct use of drugs in the field of Body-Building can be effective though the collaboration of instructors, trainers and owners of sporting centres.
